A denominazione di origine protetta (DOP) in Italian, in English protected designation of origin (for Valle d’Aosta, an officially bilingual French-Italian region), is a European Community quality label awarded to certain designations of origin commercial agricultural products which are grown or bred and sometimes processed according to an ancient custom in a defined geographical area. The commercial use of an appellation preserved by DOP can only be obtained by respecting the specifications attached to it.
